The Rotary Club of Unley's activities are undertaken within Rotary's
four avenues of service:
- Community Service
- Vocational & Youth Service
- International Service
- Club Service
Notable on-going activities of the Club include:
South Australian Police Officer of the Year Award
This annual award seeks to highlight the service provided to our community
by the South Australia Police and recognises outstanding acts of courtesy,
courage, kindness, understanding, compassion and devotion to duty by
any member of SAPOL. Each year's winner is chosen by the club from nominations
received from individuals and groups in the community. This prestigious
award is presented at a public ceremony held in Rundle Mall, Adelaide.
In 2003 the Club celebrated the 25th year of the presentation of the
SA Police Officer of the
Year Award.
Thrift Shop
The Club's Thrift
Shop in Unley Road, Unley is a major source of fund raising
for Rotary projects. A team of dedicated volunteers who come from the
local community and include Rotarians and their partners staffs the
shop. Click on the link at the beginning of this paragraph to see how
you too can make a difference in our community by supporting the work
of the Thrift Shop.
Vocational Visits
Several times each year the members of the Club make a visit to workplaces
to gain an appreciation and understanding of occupations pursued in
different industries, professions, trades and government services. In
addition to enhancing members' knowledge of various vocations, the visits
serve to enhance the importance of respecting occupation as a means
of contributing to the welfare, prosperity ad diversity of our community.
OSSAA
The Overseas
Specialist Surgical Association of Australia project
has been a major focus for our Club. For many years the
Club has supported the work of a team of Australian surgeons
and medical staff who have volunteered their time and skills
to perform much needed surgical operations for underprivileged
people in Timor and eastern parts of Indonesia.
Indigenous Health Scholarships Program
The Club has been an enthusiatic contributor to the ARHRF Indigenous
Health Scholarships Program which is a jointly funded initiative
between Rotary, State Governments and the Commonwealth Government. The
aim of the program is to provide a scholarship fund that can be used
for assisting Indigenous students studying nursing, medicine and allied
health. The purpose of the program is to increase the number of Indigenous
medical staff and by so doing, improve the health of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Island people, in rural and remote areas of Australia
where access to basic preventative medicine treatment is often difficult.
