Vocational & Youth Service Activities 1999-2000

Police Expo 2000 - Launch of the 'Police Officer of the Year Award' - Our (first-time) invitation to the Club to be part of the Expo, not only confirmed the South Australia Police's high regard for this award, but also highlighted their appreciation of our positive interaction. As well as being an excellent public forum to launch the Police Officer of the Year Award for 1999, it was also an opportunity to promote the activities and benefits of Rotary to the wider community (approx 85-90,000 people attended). As a result of the Expo, a great many more nominations for the Award were received than in previous years.

Police Officer of the Year Award 1999 - The Club again presented this prestigious annual award for the 22nd consecutive year.

Vocational Visits to the Festival Theatre for an Adelaide Symphony Orchestra rehearsal, preceded by a meal at the Bistro.

Video - A video entitled 'Prostate Knowledge for Over 50s' was purchased for the Club members. The production and distribution of theses videos was a project of the Rotary Club of Lismore, NSW.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) - The Club supported the attendance of two young people at this year's program at a cost of $600.

International Service Activities 1999-2000

ASEA Rehab (Major Project) - Construction of a rehabilitation facility in Soe, West Timor at an estimated cost of $81,000 (note: a similar 20 bed center in Australia would likely cost approx $1.1m). John Russell, an architect who is a member of the Rotary Club of Unley drew up the plans for the new facility. After experiencing various delays due to the Timor crisis, ASEA Rehab has now been officially invited to take up their work again in West Timor by the local Ministry of Health.

Sandarkan Hospis - Training and development of palliative care. Following the success of a palliative care training course in Adelaide in 1997-98 for a team of palliative care workers from Malaysia, a Complementary Therapy Course has been organized for volunteers in Sandarkan, East Malaysia. Since it was more cost-effective to send the course presenters from Australia to Sandarkan to bring over 80 participants to Adelaide, our Club contributed $4,900 towards the cost of the presenters' air fares. The rotary Club of Sandarkan contributed $2,000 towards the project.

Hospis Association Tawau, Sabah - Palliative Care course. The Tawau Hospis Association and the Rotary Club of Tawau jointly organized this course for 120 participants. Our Club donated $700 towards costs.

Australian Aid for Cambodia Fund (AACF) - This was the fourth and final year of assistance for three students for a four-year course at a university selected by the AACF. Cost $1,800 per year.

Donations In Kind (DIK) - 114 cartons of obsolete school books were collected for distribution to schools in English-speaking countries in Melanesia and Polynesia.

Other minor projects:
-  Olivia Lott - to attend the Hague International Model United nations
   conference ($250).
-  Literacy and Numeracy Program in Nepal ($350).
-  Wind-up Radios for East Timor ($240).

Club Service Activities 1999-2000

In addition to the activities undertaken above, the Club undertook the following:

Annual Bowls Match with the Rotary Club of Mitcham - Again Unley was successful in retaining the bowls trophy.  Congratulations to the awesome team who upheld the honour of the club!

Adelaide to Crafers Highway Tunnel Walk - Rotarians helped make this event one of the most successful promotional and fund raising campaigns for Rotary International.  Over $130,000 was raised due to the efforts of over 70 Rotary Clubs throughout South Australia.

President's Emergency Fund - $1,000 was donated to the Mozambique Flood Disaster (an appeal raised by Rotary international).

Major Project Fund - As the balance of this fund was fully utilized for a major project in 1998-99, $5,000 was transferred into this fund towards another major project in the future.

Trust Agreement with Campbelltown Shareskills Inc (CSI) - On the closure of CSI $20,000 was transferred to the Club and placed in an Annuity Trust Account.  Annual interest may be spent by the Club on any training and employment related activities for the next 20 years, after which time the trust funds may be consolidated into the Club's general project funds.
