Avoidable Blindness Project - This project had the support of our World President and became a major expenditure item of this committee, being progressed as a joint project with the Rotary Club of Bombay South and the Rotary Club of Hong Kong. The focus of the project is to set up a Cornea Retrieval Centre in Bombay (Mumbai) and assist those people who are corneally blind. A Matching Grant Application has been lodged and is currently being processed by Rotary International. Our contribution is around $10,000.

Sandakan Hospice, Malaysia - Along with the Rotary Club of Sandakan we supported, by way of airfares, ($2000) the presence of Australian professionals at a palliative care course.

Seeds for Alieu, East Timor - Two shipments of maize seeds have been purchased and sent to East Timor (approx $1000) with transport of both consignments being provided free by the Australian Army.

School desks for PNG - With the acute shortage of school desks in PNG the Rotary Club of Lae organised to manufacture them locally and our donation of $1000 produced 15 school desks.

  Mitcham Rotary Club.

Programme - Members enjoyed a well balanced array of guest speakers at dinner meetings encompassing a wide variety of interesting topics.

Fundraising - The Thrift Shop remains our major source of fundraising income with Gross Sales being $56,097.85 for the eleven months to end of May. This figure is expected to be around $61,000 for the full year to June 2001 (last calendar year sales were $59,000) and would then constitute around 95% of our fundraising income.

The balance of fundraising income (approx $2000) was derived from our weekly wine raffle, our weekly lucky square raffle, sale of Rotary Christmas cakes, Christmas cards, Entertainment books and Emergency Medical books.

In addition to the above our Ladies auxiliary organised a Christmas raffle which netted approx $700 (for specific designated projects).
